Adenomyosis
What is Adenomyosis?
Adenomyosis is a common condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows within the muscular wall of the uterus. This can cause the uterus to become enlarged and may lead to heavy, painful periods and chronic pelvic pain.
Adenomyosis most commonly affects women in their 30s and 40s, although it can occur at any reproductive age. Improved ultrasound and MRI imaging have led to increased recognition of the condition, and it is now thought to affect a significant proportion of women with pelvic pain or heavy menstrual bleeding.
Symptoms
The symptoms of adenomyosis can vary considerably between individuals. Some women have no symptoms, while others experience heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic pressure, pain during intercourse or symptoms that interfere with daily activities and quality of life.
Symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen over time if left untreated.
Adenomyosis and Endometriosis
Adenomyosis frequently coexists with endometriosis. Both conditions are associated with pelvic pain and inflammation, and many women diagnosed with one condition may also have features of the other. Recognising the presence of both conditions is important, as this may influence treatment options and expected outcomes.
What are the treatment options for Adenomyosis
Treatment is tailored to a woman's symptoms, age, reproductive plans and individual goals. Options may include pain-relieving medications, hormonal therapies such as the oral contraceptive pill, progesterone treatments or a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD).
For women with persistent symptoms that do not respond to conservative measures, surgical options may be considered. The most appropriate treatment depends on symptom severity, fertility considerations and the extent of disease.
