Robotic-Assisted Gynaecological Surgery

Dr Caroline Mathias Specialist Gynaecological Surgeon Sydney Robotic Surgery Gynaecology

Robotic-assisted surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive ("keyhole") surgery that allows procedures to be performed through small incisions using specialised robotic instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. The robotic system is an extension of conventional laparoscopy, providing enhanced vision, precision, and instrument dexterity, while offering the benefits of less pain, smaller scars, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery compared with traditional open surgery.

During robotic surgery, the surgeon remains in complete control at all times, operating the robotic instruments from a console within the operating theatre. The robotic system does not perform the surgery independently; rather, it translates the surgeon's movements into highly precise actions within the body.

Dr. Mathias has completed fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and robotic gynaecological surgery and utilises robotic technology for selected complex procedures where enhanced precision may be beneficial. This may include surgery for distorted pelvic anatomy, complex hysterectomy and myomectomy procedures, repeat pelvic surgery, and advanced Stage IV endometriosis involving organs such as the bowel, bladder, ureters, or diaphragm. The choice between conventional laparoscopy and robotic surgery is individualised, ensuring the most appropriate approach for each patient's condition and surgical goals.
