Dr Caroline Mathias Specialist Gynaecological Surgeon Sydney Hysteroscopic Procedures

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows direct visualisation of the inside of the uterus using a small camera passed through the cervix. It is commonly used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, postmenopausal bleeding, infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and abnormalities identified on ultrasound.

Dr. Mathias performs hysteroscopic procedures for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Diagnostic procedures include assessment of the uterine cavity and obtaining endometrial biopsies or curettage (D&C) when required. Therapeutic hysteroscopy allows treatment of conditions such as endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, uterine adhesions, retained tissue, and removal of difficult or embedded intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Most hysteroscopic procedures are performed as day surgery and do not require abdominal incisions. This approach offers rapid recovery, minimal discomfort, and precise treatment while preserving the uterus whenever possible.
