Chronic Pelvic Pain
Chronic pelvic pain is persistent or recurrent pain in the pelvis or lower abdomen lasting more than six months. It is a complex condition that can significantly affect quality of life, including physical, emotional, sexual, and social wellbeing.
There are many possible causes of chronic pelvic pain, including endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic adhesions, pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder conditions, bowel disorders, and nerve-related pain. In many cases, more than one factor may be contributing to symptoms.
When pain persists for a long period, the nervous system can become increasingly sensitive, a process known as pain sensitisation. This can result in ongoing pain even after the original cause has improved, making symptoms more difficult to manage.
Our Approach
The first step is establishing an accurate diagnosis through a detailed assessment of symptoms, medical history, examination, and appropriate investigations. Once the underlying causes and contributing factors have been identified, a personalised treatment plan is developed.
As chronic pelvic pain is often multifactorial, treatment frequently requires a multidisciplinary approach. Dr Mathias works closely with a trusted network of pain specialists, pelvic health physiotherapists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide tailored, evidence-based care. The goal is to improve pain, restore function, and achieve meaningful long-term improvements in quality of life.
