Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, previously called PCOS)
Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a common hormonal condition affecting up to 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. It can affect ovulation, hormone levels, metabolism, and fertility.
Common symptoms include irregular or absent periods, difficulty conceiving, excess facial or body hair, acne, scalp hair thinning, and weight gain. Some women with PMOS also have insulin resistance, which can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other long-term health conditions.
Diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms, blood tests, and ultrasound findings, after excluding other possible causes of hormonal imbalance.
Management
Treatment is tailored to each individual's symptoms and goals. Options may include lifestyle modifications, hormonal treatments to regulate menstrual cycles, medications to improve insulin sensitivity, treatment of acne or excess hair growth, and fertility treatments for women wishing to conceive.
Dr Mathias provides a comprehensive assessment and personalised management plan, focusing on symptom control, long-term health, and fertility optimisation where appropriate.
